The Freedom 38 has an amazingly simple and reliable rig. NEW STRONG TRACK sys just installed!!! The freestanding carbon fiber mast has proven itself in over three decades of use including southern ocean storms. In the 1982 BOC singlehanded round the world race “Lady Pepperell” was rolled twice in the Southern Ocean; her Tillotson-Pearson built free standing carbon mast stayed upright and intact. No spreaders, shrouds or backstay eliminates the leaks and numerous failure modes found with conventional stayed rigs. The gooseneck is laminated to the mast rather than screwed and is amazingly strong and reliable. With no backstay, the full battened mainsail has a very large roach as found on newer generation race boats. Lazy jacks and full battens make handling this large sail very easy. Although the boat is very much mainsail powered, a self-tacking, small jib with camberspar boom helps windward performance. All lines are led aft to the cockpit where rope clutches and two self-tailing winches are placed under protection of the dodger and within easy reach of the helmsman.
