Overview

This Hunter 40 Legend is a tremendous value. Its broad decks, large cockpit and comfortable, spacious interior suggest a big vacation boat, but with a PHRF of 96, ‘JubJub is definitely a performance cruiser.

Aft cabin with centerline queen is tremendous. She is a very fast boat and sails very well in both high winds and lumpy seas.

Under power, the boat is easy on fuel and very comfortable. Because she’s somewhat light she responds very well to the throttle and is very easy to steer moving forward or reverse.

Current Situation

The sellers have only owned the boat for seven months. They have not even sailed her except for the repositioning to her current marina (Tyee Marina, Tacoma). Their circumstances changed almost immediately after buying the boat and their cruising plans have been put on hold. Consequently, this represents a great opportunity for another family to pick up a nice production cruiser at bargain pricing.

Maintenance Considerations

There are a few things that need consideration or attention aboard.

First, a prior owner had a nice anchor windlass installed, but rather than install it on deck, they put it in the anchor locker and moved the anchor hold to a bin in the foot of the forward cabin V-berth bunk, shortening the bunk by a foot or so. This apparently wasn’t an issue for that owner who either had no sleeping guests aboard or only had small children or short friends.

Second, the salon cushions need recovering. Maybe not immediately, but certainly before the in-laws come.

Third, it is unknown when the last bottom paint was done, but it seems reasonable to expect it is due.

Lastly, when the owners were repositioning the boat in her inaugural trip, they had the misfortune to strike ground with the keel. There doesn’t seem to be any consequential damage, but it’s a matter properly to be disclosed. The owner had a surveyor inspect it and he indicated that it didn’t seem to be of any continuing impact beyond the inevitable blame-shifting and embarrassment caused the husband and wife.

Candidly, the accumulation of these issues is why the boat is priced where it is. Still, the sellers are open to reasonable offers.

Broker Comments

My view is that it is an awful lot of boat for the money. An owner who had some modest craftsmanship skills and a bit of love and a bit of money could buy a lot of equity with this boat, and have a spacious, fast cruiser upon completion.

Among the key features are:

  • Diesel furnace
  • Freezer / refrigeration
  • Spacious interior, with two heads and sleeping accommodations for several.
  • Centerline queen berth in master cabin.
  • Fast in all angles
