Overview

The Catalina 42 is a a handsome boat that offers solid performance, excellent accommodations, and good value for buyers looking for a cruiser or club racer in this size range.

The 42 was introduced in 1989 and became an instant classic. 477 Mk 1 42s were produced, and to date, over 1,000 Catalina 42s have been built. It was one of the first in its class to offer this very popular three-stateroom layout and it has been copied by many manufacturers since.

It has proven itself as a capable and versatile cruiser with a comfortable interior and a nice sailing hull shape.

Willawaw is nicely outfitted for extended season of PNW cruising, with full canvas cockpit enclosure and diesel furnace. The boat is fitted with a bow thruster, lazy jacks and an electric cabintop winch for ease of operations in all weather.

Accommodations

Willawaw has three staterooms. The comfortable master is situated in the bow with a portside double and private head forward. In the salon there is a large, circular settee situated to port, with seating for six or more. Across is the bright and airy galley with plenty of storage. To port and aft of the settee arrangement is a spacious and well-appointed nav station. Aft of the galley is a head with shower stall and further aft are two spacious, symmetrical staterooms with double berth, hanging locker and other storage.

The interior is fairly light with a nice balance of traditional teak and white surfaces. Stowage is very good so the Catalina 42 can be cruised on long coastal runs without running out of room for the necessities.

Accommodations features include:

  • Wallas Spartan 15,400 BTU diesel furnace. Furnace is controlled by a mobile phone app, so that you can turn on the heat remotely while you're on your way to the boat so that it's warm when you arrive.
  • Dual voltage refrigeration
  • Newer $2,000 custom mattress in master stateroom
  • 110 vac water heater
Sails & Rigging

Rigged as a sloop, Willawaw has double aft-swept spreaders and a fully-battened mainsail with lazyjacks. A solid vang is fitted. The masthead sloop carries a total of 800 sq. ft. of upwind sail area and the shrouds are set well inboard for tight sheeting angles.

All lines are led aft to the cockpit and the main halyard is easily managed with a fitted electric winch.

It is not known the age of the sails or rigging, but the sails are serviceable and the rigging appears in good condition. A buyer's survey is always recommended to assist in evaluating the boat's condition.

Sailing to within 35 degrees of the apparent wind, the Catalina 42 has been a very capable club racer with a PHRF rating around 105.

Hull & Deck

The Catalina 42 boasts the largest cockpits in their class. With 6’ 8” seats, you can stretch out on either side of a table. The helm seat is removable to provide a nice walk-through to the swim platform.

The mainsheet traveler is on the cabintop and two winches on either side of the companionway manage halyards and reefing lines. The starboard side is fitted with an electric winch for ease of sail handling, light-handed operations and safe maneuvering offshore. Lines are led aft via blocks at the base of the mast so there’s no need to leave the cockpit to reef or even hoist the mainsail.

Among the cruising conveniences that Willawaw is fitted with include:

  • Sidepower SE100 / 185T twin-prop bow thruster
  • Cabintop electric winch
  • Fin keel
  • Iverson Dodger with full canvas enclosure and stratoglass clears
  • Electric windlass with remote control
Electrical & Electronic

The boat is fitted with four newer G27 batteries for house and engine start operations. There are also two AGM batteries in the bow for operation of the bow thruster and windlass.

There are two battery chargers aboard, one for the main bank (400 a/hrs., segmented with a Perko 1 / 2 selection switch) and a separate charger for the bow thruster bank (2 AGM).

The sellers have upgraded all lighting appliances to LED for optimized energy use.

The boat is fitted with all of the necessary electronics including:

  • Stereo with bluetooth input
  • 2-Way AIS
  • Cockpit security camera with phone app alerts
  • Radar
  • Chartplotter
  • Autopilot
  • VHF Radio
  • Depth / Speed
Mechanical

Willawaw is powered by a Yanmar 44 hp diesel with only 628 engine hours. It runs perfectly and will serve for many years if maintained properly.

Other systems include:

  • Wallas Spartan 15,400 BTU diesel furnace. Furnace is controlled by a mobile phone app for remote control.
  • Sidepower SE100 / 185T Bow Thruster
  • Electric Windlass with remote control for easy anchoring
Broker Comments

Willawaw is a beautiful and spacious boat with comfortable accommodations for a cruising family or for charter operations. The boat is solid underfoot and sails like a witch with predictable Catalina nimbleness. The cockpit is spacious and comfortable. There are cockpit cushions and chairs for added comfort. The binnacle is fitted with necessary electronics and the removable helm seat makes it easy to access the swim step for docking or disembarking.

The Catalina has always been a favorite of mine. It is a perfect blend of performance and spacious family cruiser. This boat presents very well and is priced to sell. Call Daniel Voorhees at 2064076411 for access to a larger library of images and to arrange your inspection before it's sold.
