General Description

Alaskan Song was built as a high-speed Air/Sea Rescue boat for the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII.  In the mid-1970s she was stripped to a bare hull.  A naval architect designed a new layout, the below deck bulkheads were rearranged, a new plywood and fiberglass deck was laid, the all-aluminum superstructure was fabricated and installed and a custom teak interior was crafted.

Beginning with the full yacht refit Alaskan Song has had 3 owners who have lavished updates and attention on her, resulting in a boat of unique heritage, with constant, comprehensive updates and continuously maintained in astounding condition.

A remarkably seakindly vessel with a stunning all teak interior, she has provided reliable service for many years and is in condition to continue doing so for many more.

An Exquisite Yacht With a Rich History

Originally built as a high speed ocean rescue boat for the US Army Air Corps in 1944.  This boat was finished as WW2 came to an end.  She was put in mothballs and eventually sold as surplus.  She underwent a complete refit and conversion to a yacht in the mid 1970s.  She has had only three owners since conversion, all of whom spared no expense in making improvements, additions, maintenance and care.

Arrangement

Coming on board the generous single level deck plan includes a spacious foredeck with teak seating on a roomy gear locker sweeping across the front of the trunk cabin as well as a sturdy, seven foot aluminum bow pulpit.  The ample side decks lead back to an open sided, but covered, aft deck with a large round table/cabinet, a long custom vegetable/wine cooler starboard, a 15 cubic foot freezer port and a large stainless barbeque with oven and a tackle locker along the aft deck hand rail. Forward against the back of the house you will find an door to starboard, stairs to the bridge centerline and a cabinet with sink and counter to port.   A ladder at the aft rail leads down to a new 18x4 foot aluminium & stainless swim step, featuring a large, custom starboard cleaning table.  Everything about this boat is solid and obviously well cared for and in excellent finish.

The upper deck features two 15’ Boston Whaler Sport skiffs with recently purchased 75 hp Evinrude Etech outboards, VHF radios and Garmin sounder/chart plotters.  Each skiff has its own dedicated, custom aluminum crane.  The drystack is centered with a full flying bridge forward.  The bridge has Microcomander controls, full engine gauges, depth and speed repeater as well as a repeat display with remote controls for the radar/chart plotter.  There is generous seating and storage built in on the upper deck.

Entering the large, raised panel teak dutch door into the aft salon one immediately notices the heavy custom, wild teak moldings, doors and cabinetry with the added touch of a unique  teak dental molding throughout.  The aft salon features a wet bar along the aft wall to port of the entry door with sink, locking liquor cabinet and icemaker.  Forward center is a small card table with a setee with storage below to starboard and a built in china and crystal cabinet to port of the door and steps leading down and forward to the engine room and the aft two cabins.  Passing forward toward the pilot house there is a large built in upright cabinet.  Storage abounds on this yacht.  Every compartment has convenient built in compartments far beyond what one would expect.

The pilot house is raised up three steps affording it remarkable visibility forward to both sides with doors out both sides.  There is a small captain’s cabin with a bunk, head and sink on a counter.  The bridge abounds with a modern, complete array of electronics with two radars, Computer based navigation system, dedicated chart plotter, satellite compass, Wesmar scanning sonar, two depth sounders.  The fully adjustable, all leather Norsap helm seat from Norway is impressive and extremely comfortable.

Further forward the galley/main salon looks out with full windows on each side and forward, full of light and incredibly roomy.  With tile floors and backsplash, a full array of quality German appliances and generous storage, the galley is a chef’s dream. 

Down below is a roomy stand up engine room, wine locker and five staterooms each with their own head and shower, one with a bathtub.  There is also a laundry area with washer and dryer.  All compartments feature the same stunning woodwork, roomy storage and solid rectangular bronze portholes.

A Proven Charter Operation

Alaskan Song has been a successful charter vessel for 13 years. In that time, the owner / operators were remarkably never forced to cancel a charter due to any reason. She has been maintained to the highest standards, with no expense spared in her ongoing upkeep, and it shows throughout the boat.

Alaskan Song has successfully booked 12 to 15 charters each year she was in service for the owners. Over the last five years of operation, they generated net operating profits of 69% !

Dimensions, Construction & Specifications

The hull was designed and built to rigorous military standards. With 12" centered frames, 1.5" thick cross lapped timber of Mahogany and Cedar and massive bronze ports, Alaskan Song was built to endure the toughest sea conditions and last for literally generations.

Some wooden pleasure boats were built to last for maybe 20 years and correspondingly, there exists some stigma related to wooden vessels. But a survey will reveal that this boat was built to the most uncompromising standards and has been very well taken care of. It seems fair to ask: How many fiberglass boats that you're aware of could realistically be expected to still be in excellent condition after 76 years? This boat could be hosting your great-grandchildren in 50 years. Make a close inspection and see for yourself.

Broker Comments

The meticulous care and attention to detail is immediately evident approaching Alaskan Song at the dock.  She has the long lines of a classic motor yacht.  Her polished white hull is complimented by generous teak rails and doors along with heavy 1.5” polished stainless safety rails and rub rails.

The interior wasn't simply constructed. It was crafted with great care and attention to detail. The teak bulkheads, joinery, panels and doors would be impossible to replicate today, but if the volume of old-growth teak were available, the cost would certainly exceed a million dollars. The craftsmanship is evident in the details, with continuous cornice pieces and solid teak doors among the extensive details.

Systems aboard are all rock-solid and require very little in the way of service to be ready for repositioning to any point on the globe. With a fuel consumption rate of 7 gph (including one genset), Alaskan Song has a range of approximately 2,500 n.m.

The presentation of the boat exceeds expectations. The photography does not convey the spaciousness and the pristine condition that the vessel is in. I have assembled a series of walk-through videos that are available upon request.

The boat is perfect for her service as an Alaskan charter boat. Rugged and yet luxurious at the same time. Since the vessel's conversion into a luxury yacht, the current owners and the two owners before them have lavished the boat with an open checkbook, continuously updating her and maintaining her very high standard. 

The owners have enjoyed thirteen years of operation aboard Alaskan Song and personal circumstances now compel them to put her on the market. Alaskan Song is Jones Act Compliant and immediately ready to serve her new owners in charter service or as a private yacht.
